In their eyes, it’s a toy. In their hands, it’s a tool.

Although young children are growing up in an increasingly digital environment, most schools’ curriculum does not always focus on exploring the digital world until later years. We at Shalom Presidency School believe that while learning about the natural world is important, developing children’s knowledge of the human-made world, the world of technology and engineering, is also needed for children to understand the environment they live in.

Keeping in mind the same vision, we organized a full day Robotics workshop for the students of our Pre-Primary wing. Students explored foundational engineering concepts by learning how to maneuver robotic manipulatives. The robotics component of each lesson involved a hands-on building or programming task that children completed in groups of two to three with an interactive map representing some basic shapes. Children explored the basic parts of the ‘Beebot’ robot .They learned how to operate its motor and sensors. Its child friendly layout appealed to children and it was a perfect starting point for teaching control, directional language and programming to young children. Teachers used the Bee-Bots as a tool to enhance learning in Literacy, Science & Numeracy through a multitude of activities.
