In an attempt to sensitize our children towards becoming responsible citizens, Shalom Presidency School has initiated a Community Outreach Programme in collaboration with government approved E waste recycling agency, Deshwal Waste Management Pvt. Ltd.

An E waste collection center has been set up at SPS. In days to come children will step out of the four walls of their classrooms to create awareness about hazardous nature of E waste and contribute to the noble cause.

A workshop cum tutorial was conducted in the school by experts in the field on 25th of September 2018 for creating an awareness among children about various aspects of e- waste. The highly interactive session brought out the best in children. To build a more structured and clear idea of the grave issue the children were asked about electrical and electronic gadgets they use at home and the management of waste generated in the form of plastic bottles, microphones, lamps, batteries etc. The doubts of children regarding difference between electrical and electronic items were also addressed. Then came the core question – What is e- waste? The children learnt that according to the official definition of UN, it means discarded electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). The amount of e- waste generated world wide was beyond the wild guesses of children. According to UN data of 2016 44.7 million metric tonnes of e- waste is produced every year that is equivalent to 4500 Eiffel towers. It was further concerning to know that barely 15% of e- waste is recycled. A video was shown to children on the hazardous effects of e- waste. The poisonous effects range from threat to environment to impaired body senses and organs.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle was the mantra given to the children.
